Day 4 (Perth Waste Management Centre) - Blogged by: Victoria, Chantelle, Hai Shu, Xin Jie, Jia Hao, Leroy & Jia Jun

We saw how a certain city in Perth manages most of the waste that they collect from their residents. The waste has to go through many processes before turning into compost which is a combination of processed waste materials mixed together with soil material. This compost is very useful to plants and it is made up of dead organic matter. We only knew what compost was when we went to this centre as before this, we had only heard about it but did not really know what composts means. It can be turned into fertilizer which contains a lot of nutrients that helps plants grow better.

At first the waste management centre had to pay farmers to convince them to use the compost for their farm so that they can spread the message on how useful these compost can be in providing the plants with useful nutrients. After several months of convincing farmers to use their compost materials, farmers now could accept the usefulness of such materials for their farm. The waste management centre then did not have to pay the farmers to use their compost but just had to pay for the transportation to get the compost to the farms. They even collaborated with a fertilizer nutrient company to add some addictives to their compost to make it more fertile for the farms who are using them.

Making of these compost came from the waste materials that are collected over this city in Perth requires several steps. One of the steps is where the waste are put in to long huge tubes which will toss and turn the wastes to help break down the waste materials into small bits. They call these huge tubes “Digester” as it helps to “digest” these waste and break them up into smaller pieces. The tubes will be spinning for 3 days before the “digested” materials get sent out of the tubes for the other processes.

We learnt a lot from this visit and think that we could use some of these ideas back in our school in some ways. We certainly learnt about how we can help contribute to the saving of our environment.

  1. You all are surely having a great time learning many things :) It is important to learn about another country's culture and environment and compare them with your own. This is an opportunity your parents never had in their school day. I hope you all will treasure this rare opportunity that you are having now and be thankful to your parents, teachers and teammates for giving you this opportunity.

Have a great time.... and enjooooooy yourselves :)
