We were really excited when we reached Ardross Primary School this morning at 8.30 am. Our group was attached to Year 6/7 Room 20. Firstly, we shared with the pupils some facts about Singapore and our life as a student. After the presentation, the teacher, Mrs Lawrence, paired us with the pupils. We were all very nervous and excited at the same time as all of us did not know what to expect. However, our worries were unfounded as all our buddies were really nice people. They were super friendly and cheerful. We were given 5 minutes to introduce ourselves and we found that our buddies were very spontaneous and confident during their self-introduction.
Next, we joined in some of the Math activities with our buddies. Mrs Lawrence gave us a slip of paper each and we played ‘Linos finger’. We enjoyed ourselves tremendously as we played the Math game and a spelling game. Time flew by very fast and “Ring…” it was time for recess.

Their recess was about 20 minutes long where they get to eat small snacks like cakes, apples, etc. They will have their lunch break, which is an hour long, at 12.20 after that. How I wish that we could have such a long lunch break in Singapore, but that will mean that we will have longer hours in school. After eating their snacks, the Australian pupils are free to play in the fields and playgrounds. We really envy them as they have a lot of space to run around and they actually have 3 playgrounds!! Ardross Primary specialises in Science and Environment, thus they actually have solar panels which are funded by the state to save energy. They have also planted many trees and are very active in planting and gardening. We are amazed that the classes have many students from various parts of the world e.g. Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Indonesia, America, Japan, etc.

After the recess, our buddies brought us to the art room where they had their art lessons. After a short briefing by the art teacher, Mrs Warren, our buddies brought out their posters/ banners and continued working on them. They have been working hard on designing posters and banners to celebrate their school’s 50th anniversary. Some of us were really excited as we could help to finish up or do some touch-ups to the banners. As we saw our buddies putting on their red aprons, we were surprised that they actually had aprons prepared for them to protect their clothes. How we wish that our art room could have some aprons for us as well! The rest of us started to draw manga / comic characters following the strips of ‘step-by-step’ instruction. It was a truly fun and enriching experience for us!
